State Street Corp. (STT) on Wednesday said it will move its headquarters to downtown Boston as part of a major redevelopment project in the city it has called home for more than 225 years.

The financial-services company said it will relocate in 2023 to One Congress Tower, part of the Bulfinch Crossing project in downtown Boston that will create six new high-rise and mid-rise buildings near city hall.

The Boston Globe on Wednesday reported that State Street has signed a 15-year lease for 510,000 square feet in the 43-story tower, and will move at least 2,500 employees from its current headquarters by Boston's South Station when its lease expires in 2023.

State Street said the move doesn't affect its building at One Channel Center in Boston's Seaport, which opened in 2014 and is leased until 2030.
