August 08 2011 - 9:00AM
Business Wire
Motorola Solutions, Inc. (NYSE: MSI) has honored retired Orlando
Police Department Chief Val B. Demings with the Woman Law
Enforcement Executive of the Year Award, jointly sponsored by the
National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives (NAWLEE)
and Motorola. The award recognizes an individual who has
distinguished herself in law enforcement and in her community, and
each year’s recipient epitomizes the values NAWLEE stands for and
represents the best of women in law enforcement.
Chief Demings has made a positive impact in her community. From
2008-2010, Orlando had its lowest crime rate in history under her
leadership. For example, in 2009, despite significant budget cuts,
homicides and robberies were down by more than 46 percent, while
violent crimes were reduced by more than 33 percent.
Chief Demings introduced the use of social media to help
identify suspects, which helped to show youth, parents and other
community members that they have a voice. Chief Demings also has
given speeches on leadership to women’s organizations and civic
groups. As a leader, she has created better educational
opportunities with the Hal Marsten GED Program and Operation
Positive Direction, which gives 100 “at risk” middle school
students the opportunity to participate in activities that promote
individual growth.
After a career in law enforcement that spanned more than 27
years, Chief Demings retired from her position on June 1, 2011 to
focus her attention on running for Congress. Many of her former
colleagues, including retirees, active civilians and sworn members,
say Demings will be remembered as the “most successful” and the
“best” chief in agency history. Chief Demings received the award at
the Annual NAWLEE conference held in Milwaukee and attended by more
than 100 nationwide leaders.
