Fujitsu: Closely Watching What Google Does After Motorola Deal
August 15 2011 - 10:53PM
Dow Jones News
Fujitsu Ltd. (6702.TO) said Tuesday it is closely watching
Google Inc.'s (GOOG) acquisition of Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc.
(MMI), but it remains unclear what specific moves Google may make
and how they could affect Japanese handset makers like Fujitsu.
Fujitsu, whose main businesses include technology services as
well as personal computers and mobile phones, is a major player in
Japan's handset market. But like other Japanese handset
manufacturers, Fujitsu's presence in the global market is tiny.
A Fujitsu spokesman said any positive or negative implications
the acquisition could have for Japanese handset makers remains
uncertain. If Google makes its own handsets that stand out from
other handsets that also run on Google's operating system, that
could create a strong new rival in the Japanese market, the
spokesman said.
Fujitsu currently sells three models in Japan that run on
Google's Android operating system.
