Session to Feature Discussion of New Approaches to Old Challenges and Future Initiatives MELBOURNE, Fla., Oct. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Retired Colonel Bart Harmon, MD, MPH, and chief medical officer of Harris Corporation's (NYSE:HRS) Healthcare Solutions business, will lead a master class in "National, Government and Military Health IT Synergy" at the Electronic Healthcare Records Summit to be held October 26-28 in Vienna, Virginia. The summit is sponsored by the Institute for Defense and Government Advancement. The session at 2:30 p.m. October 26 will focus on lessons learned and challenges met during recent interoperability efforts related to the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) CONNECT project - as well as previous DoD, VA, US National and NATO efforts. CONNECT enables healthcare providers to seamlessly exchange information with security and privacy, thereby improving the quality of care and reducing costs. Participants also will discuss future initiatives and gain insight into the challenges faced by different agencies and institutions. "As we look at U.S. government, national and even international needs for health information technology, there are many common elements - as well as areas where there are distinctly different needs," said Dr. Harmon. "Moving forward will require leveraging the areas of commonality while allowing for variation where it is necessary. The types of services now coming online are capable of handling significant customization within agreed-upon standards. They are also capable of supporting very diverse functions in support of the many different users and varying environments in which they operate." Harris - teamed with partners Agilex Technologies, Inc., and Scenpro, Inc. - was awarded the original development and integration contract for the NHIN CONNECT Solution in March of 2008. The company recently announced the availability of the third release of this open-source software, CONNECT 2.2. Harris Healthcare Solutions provides enterprise intelligence solutions and services for commercial and government customers, including systems integration, intelligent infrastructure, advanced visualization and display, enterprise digital content management, and IT services solutions.
