ROCHESTER, N.Y., April 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Richard Buckley has been named the 2009 recipient of the Harris Fellow Award, the highest recognition for engineering achievement at Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS). Buckley, a senior scientist with Harris RF Communications division in Rochester, N.Y., will be presented with the award at the company's annual Fellows Dinner April 27. A 25-year veteran of Harris, Buckley is being honored for his technical expertise, leadership skills, and innovative, continuous contributions in achieving and sustaining Harris Corporation's leadership position in the tactical radio market. His radio communications designs have set the industry standard for multiband RF performance. In addition, Buckley is among the key technical contributors to the success of Harris Falcon II(R) and Falcon III(R) multiband manpack radios. "Harris tactical radios have long been the solution of choice for superior performance and reliability on the battlefield," said Howard L. Lance, Harris chairman, CEO and president. "Rich's innovations in RF power amplifier technology have been invaluable in helping Harris to achieve and sustain our technical leadership position in the tactical radio market worldwide." Each year, the company reviews candidates for the Harris Fellow award. Selection is based upon having achieved significant contributions to the state-of-the-art in communications technology; recognition in the industry among peers; a demonstration of technical depth, breadth, and leadership; mentoring of others in the industry; and continuous contributions of importance to Harris. Harris Fellows receive a commemorative plaque and a substantial financial award. "Rich has played an integral role in several new product innovations, including the new Falcon III radios, which provide front-line military forces with streaming video and real-time reconnaissance information for a more broad, accurate, and safe view of the total battlefield," added Lance. Buckley received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology. He has held a variety of roles at Harris over the years. In the 1980s, he worked on a series of strategic high-power transmitters that were used in several Cold War radio programs. He also worked on the original design of the RF-382 Antenna Coupler, which is still in production today. Throughout the 1990s, Buckley played an integral role in the development of Falcon II group of radios. More recently, he has spent his time in the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) clusters, with a natural progression to the Falcon III AN/PRC-117G manpack -- the first and only combined wideband/narrowband tactical radio to be deployed by the U.S. Department of Defense. In addition to the Harris Fellow award, Harris is also recognizing 32 individuals and 12 teams for significant technical and engineering accomplishments during the past year. Categories include industry recognition; product and process innovation; reuse innovation; and publication in technical journals, presentations, and the chairing of conferences. Harris RF Communications is the leading global supplier of secure radio communications and embedded high-grade encryption solutions for military, government and commercial organizations.
