Sara Lee Corp. (SLE) is in talks to buy Brazilian coffee producer Marata, a report in Tuesday's edition of the local financial newspaper Valor Economico said.

According to the report, which cited unnamed people close to the companies, a possible acquisition could amount to one billion Brazilian reais ($617 million).

As part of the talks, the companies are also evaluating a possible merger of their coffee units in Brazil, said the report.

Marata is part of local family owned group called Grupo Jose Augusto Vieira. It is based in Brazil's northeastern state of Sergipe and operates a total of seven units, which produce coffee, juice and tea, according to the company's website.

Contacted by Dow Jones Newswires earlier Tuesday, Marata's officials were not immediately available for comment.

Marata has an annual revenue worth BRL600 million, said Valor.

Along with Sara Lee, Bunge Ltd. (BG) is also interested in a deal with Marata.
