DALLAS, April 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Belo Corp.
(NYSE: BLC), one of the nations largest pure-play, publicly-traded
television companies, announced today that KHOU-TV, its CBS
affiliate in Houston, has been
selected as a 2009 George Foster Peabody Award winner. The
winners of the 69th annual awards were announced Wednesday morning
by Webcast at the University of
Georgia, where the awards program is based.
KHOU's winning piece, Under Fire: Discrimination and
Corruption in the Texas
National Guard, was the culmination of a two-year
investigation that exposed widespread discrimination and fraud in
the Texas National Guard. The series has been honored with
multiple awards since it aired in 2009 including: a
prestigious duPont-Columbia Award; the IRE Medal, a national award
given by Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc.; and a National
Headliner Award. The series was also a finalist for the 2010
Goldsmith Prize for investigative reporting from the Shorenstein
Center at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, and was a finalist
for the Jack R. Howard Award from
The Scripps Howard Foundation.
KHOU recipients of the 2009 Peabody Award are investigative
reporter Mark Greenblatt, executive
producer David Raziq and
photojournalist Keith Tomshe.
This marks the third time KHOU has been honored with a Peabody
Award and brings to 11 the total number of Peabody Awards earned by
Belo stations since 2000, more than any other commercial station
group.
The Peabody Awards, established in 1940, are administered by the
University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism and Mass
Communication. The Peabody recognizes distinguished
achievement and meritorious public service by stations, networks,
producing organizations and individuals. The awards will be
presented on May 17 at a ceremony in
New York.
