UMB Financial Corporation (NASDAQ: UMBF) announced its selection by Sandler O'Neill and Partners (Sandler) as a top performer making its "2009 Bank and Thrift Sm-All Stars" report.

Published annually, the report selects the top 30 performers among the more than 500 publicly traded banks and thrifts in the U.S. with a market capitalization of less than $2 billion. Company selection is based on evaluation criteria which measures growth trends, profitability and capital levels.

“Being recognized with this national distinction among top-performing companies serves as a source of pride for us,” said Mariner Kemper, Chairman and CEO of UMB. “Operating with the utmost integrity is fundamental to our company. We see this as further validation of our time-tested business model based on a proven risk profile, strong underwriting standards and diversified revenue streams.”

First published in 2004, Sandler's stated purpose for the report is to "provide investors with a narrow list from which to uncover the next crop of leading small-mid cap banks and thrifts, and most important, expose them before they are discovered by the rest of the world."

Earlier this year, UMB received a No. 5 ranking in a "stress test" conducted by SNL Financial to determine the best capitalized bank holding companies nationally.
