SiriusXM Holdings Inc., known for its content-streaming offerings while in a vehicle, is offering a plan for subscribers to listen to content outside of their cars.

The company now sells an "essential" plan that costs $1 a month for the first three months, it said Monday. After that, the plan costs $8 a month. SiriusXM said its essential plan subscribers will also be able to listen to different sports talk channels, comedy programming and more.

Sirius also has a $15.99-a-month offering, which has content from radio personality Howard Stern and several sports leagues.

SiriusXM's efforts are designed to help it compete with companies like Spotify Technology SA (SPOT), which owns music-streaming service Spotify.

In February SiriusXM closed its purchase of Pandora Media Inc., the parent of music-streaming service Pandora.
