Holland Hosts Fifth Annual Safety Drive for a Cure
March 14 2017 - 7:58AM
Truck drivers from across the United States will be traveling to
the Holland service center in Atlanta, Ga., on Saturday, March 18,
to not only show their commitment to highway safety and driving
skills--but to raise awareness for the Pediatric Brain Tumor
Foundation (PBTF) Georgia Chapter at the annual Safety Drive for a
Cure.
“This event showcases how serious the trucking industry is about
safety,” said Holland President Scott Ware. “It helps get more
drivers involved in state truck driving competitions, gives veteran
drivers a way to fine tune their safety skills, and aids the
Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. Holland is honored to host the
annual Safety Drive for a Cure.”
The event originally began in 1999 in North Carolina as an
inner-company event between North Carolina and the border states as
the “Battle of the Borders.” It was developed as a way for drivers
to learn from the “best of the best” in the profession.
This year’s “Safety Drive for a Cure” features a world-class
course and over twenty of the American Trucking Associations
(ATA)’s elite Road Team Captains (including Jeff Payne, Reddaway
professional driver; and Holland professional drivers Russell
Simpson and Herschel Evans), as well as exhibiting both ATA’s image
trucks onsite.
For the past three years, the Safety Drive for a Cure has been
open to all drivers with a CDL
from any trucking company across the country.
Professional drivers can register for the event right up to
the start time of 8:00 a.m.
The Holland terminal in Atlanta first hosted the safety drive in
2013 with the support of YRC Freight where it was decided to
provide donations to the PBTF.
“It’s truly inspiring when so many truck drivers, including a
few who travel great distances, participate in an event that pairs
safe driving techniques with fundraising to help children, teens
and young adults with brain tumors,” said PBTF Director of
Philanthropy Mary Moore. “When you talk with participants and
Holland volunteers at the event, you quickly learn that the
trucking industry is made up of men and women with tremendous
hearts. We couldn’t be more grateful.”
“Safety Drive for a Cure has a real ability to positively
influence highway safety,” said Evans. “I am pleased to see so many
drivers take time out of their busy lives to attend. Their
participation as well as Holland, New Penn, Reddaway and YRC
Freight’s support demonstrates our commitment to keeping our
nation’s streets and highways safe.”
Evans, Holland’s first ATA Road Team Captain and two-time
National Truck Driving Champion, has been the driving force behind
the event in Atlanta for the last five years. As an ATA Road Team
Captain, his mission is to educate the public about safe driving
practices and the importance of the trucking industry. The Safety
Drive for a Cure has helped raise over $30,000 for the PBTF in the
past five years.
Safety Drive for a CureHolland and YRC Freight
are co-presenting sponsors for the annual Safety Drive for a Cure,
a truck safety and skills competition held at the Holland Atlanta,
Ga. service center: 4700 Highway 42 (Moreland Ave.), Ellenwood, GA
30294. The event is being held March 18, 2017. Team trophies and
awards are given to respective class champions (Straight Truck,
Three-Axle, Four-Axle, Five-Axle, Flatbed, Tanker, Sleeper, Twin
Trailers, Management, Retired, Rookie of the Year), as well as the
farthest traveled and the driver who raises the most donations for
PBTF.
The event is open to all professional drivers with a
CDL.
