Southwestern Energy Co. posted a narrower third-quarter loss as it posted lower operating costs and was boosted by higher natural gas liquid prices.

Southwestern's average realized gas price in the quarter was $1.73 per thousand cubic feet, down from $2.21 a year earlier.

For the quarter ended June 30, Southwestern posted a net loss of $735 million, or $1.52 a share, compared with a loss of $1.77 billion, or $4.62 a share, a year earlier.

Excluding certain items, the company earned 3 cents a share, compared with a penny a share a year earlier.

Revenue fell to $651 million from $749 million.

Analysts cited by Thomson Reuters had expected adjusted earnings of 7 cents on revenue of $619 million.
