Vehicle telematics products going LTE

Sequans Communications S.A. (NYSE: SQNS) announced that Zubie has adopted Sequans’ LTE chip technology for the new LTE version of its award-winning connected-car solution. The new device provides drivers with in-car Wi-Fi hotspot service and also lets them monitor and track important vehicle and trip information. The Zubie OBD-II device plugs into the onboard diagnostics (OBD) port of a car and connects to the car’s internal network to access vehicle information, and to Verizon’s LTE network to provide always-on internet access for passengers using the built-in Wi-Fi mobile hotspot capability.

“We chose Sequans because of its leadership in LTE for the Internet of Things (IoT) and because we believe Sequans’ LTE chipset is the most powerful and efficient single-mode solution available today,” said Ari Silkey, Zubie CTO. “It is optimized for the IoT and also came pre-certified for Verizon, which significantly shortened our time to market.”

“Zubie is a leader in connected-car solutions and we are proud to provide the always-on LTE connectivity for the newest Zubie device,” said Craig Miller, Sequans VP of marketing. “In-car mobile hotspot capability is in great demand and the Zubie solution offers great utility for consumers.”

The Sequans’ LTE chipset inside the Zubie device is certified compliant with Verizon Wireless Open Network specifications and supports Verizon’s LTE bands 4 and 13, delivering category 4 throughput and other advanced features.

“Analysts have predicted that by 2020 every new car will be a connected car,” said Silkey. “LTE will play a tremendous role as cars continue to evolve towards that. The ability to leverage LTE now in after-market telematics is a major step forward for both consumers and the industry overall.”

The Zubie in-car W-Fi device is available now at Best Buy.
