ANN ARBOR, Mich., July 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- A union
representation election scheduled for today at Con-way Freight's
Oakland maintenance facility,
located in Hayward, CA, was
cancelled when the International Association of Machinists and
Aerospace Workers Union notified the National Labor Relations Board
that it was withdrawing its petition for election.
The union had petitioned for a vote to represent mechanics at
the Oakland maintenance shop.
Unions often withdraw petitions for elections when they don't
believe they have enough votes to win.
Joseph M. Dagnese, president of
Con-way Freight, thanked the employees for their support and
confidence in the company. "I want to commend our employees on
giving this important decision the thorough consideration it
deserved, and ultimately agreeing with us that our best path
forward is one where we continue to work together directly, without
the interference of a third party," said Dagnese.
The withdrawal of the election petition for the Oakland maintenance shop marked the second
defeat for the International Association of Machinists and
Aerospace Workers Union in its attempts to organize Con-way Freight
mechanics. The union had earlier lost a representation election at
a Con-way Freight facility in Indiana.
Con-way Freight currently does not have a contract with any
union at any of its nearly 300 locations in the U.S.
