James R. Smith, FACHE, a nationally-recognized provider and
payer consulting strategist, has joined Navigant (NYSE: NCI) as a
managing director in its Healthcare practice. In this role, Smith
will advise hospital, health system, physician enterprise, and
payer executives and boards on operating health plans and
high-performing provider networks.
Smith has more than 30 years of experience building and leading
provider organizations and health plans. He’s founding president
and CEO of the Greater Rochester Independent Practice Association
(GRIPA), one of the country’s earliest clinically integrated
networks (CINs). At GRIPA, part of Rochester Regional Health, Smith
established governance and operating structures to manage a CIN
composed of more than 1,200 physicians and four hospitals serving
200,000 members.
“Jim has spent decades collaborating with payer and provider
leadership to develop and implement strategies that increase care
quality and member satisfaction, and reduce costs,” said David
Burik, managing director and leader of Navigant’s payer/provider
consulting division. “His broad expertise is invaluable in an
industry where deep integration is a must to enhance care
delivery.”
Smith most recently served as executive vice president at GE
Healthcare Camden Group, where he helped prepare hospital, health
system, and health plan senior management and boards for healthcare
reform. Prior to that, Smith was president of the Central New York
Region of Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, helping grow its
membership to more than 700,000 commercial, Medicaid, and Medicare
Advantage lives. A former health system executive, Smith also
spearheaded the development of a pair of integrated care delivery
systems.
Navigant’s Healthcare practice is composed of consultants,
former provider administrators, clinicians, and other experts with
decades of strategy, operational/clinical consulting, managed
services, revenue cycle management, and outsourcing experience.
Professionals collaborate with hospitals and health systems,
physician enterprises, payers, government, and life sciences
entities, providing strategic, performance improvement, and
business process management solutions that help them meet quality
and financial goals.
