If you're one of the millions of people who drinks lots of water to make your skin look better, or believes you don't need sunscreen on a cloudy day... think again. Dr. Sheri Feldman, a leading Beverly Hills dermatologist, just released a list of the top ten myths about skin and skincare.

"A lot of people are given misinformation about their skin at department store cosmetic counters and at spas and salons," said Dr. Feldman. "A person should turn to a doctor, dermatologist or other medical professional for accurate information about skin and how to resolve skin-related problems."

The top ten myths about skin are:

1. Water is the fountain of youth. Unless a person is suffering from severe dehydration, water does not prevent wrinkles. Wrinkles are mainly caused by sun, age and genetics. Period.

2. Moisturizers lessen wrinkles. Moisturizers do not prevent or lessen wrinkles, and, depending on a person's skin type, may actually be detrimental. If you already have oily skin, adding additional moisturizer worsens the "oil slick."

3. You don't need sunscreen on a cloudy day. UV rays from the sun penetrate clouds and reach the skin as if it was a sunny day. A person can, in fact, get sunburn on a cloudy day.

4. If a product is made with all-natural ingredients, you don't have to worry about any adverse effects. Even if something is made from natural or organic ingredients, it does not mean it will be kind to your skin. People can, and often do, have allergic or harmful reactions to natural substances.

5. Lasers can get rid of anything. Lasers, just like any technology, have limitations. Lasers have specific targets such as blood, melanin or water. Each machine has a different purpose. For example, lasers will not fix moles, keratoses, itchy rashes or most skin cancers. Lasers cannot make a 60 year-old look 20.

6. If something worked for your friend, it will work for you. Everyone is different, and has a different type of skin. Just because a particular treatment or product made one person look like Angelina Jolie, it does not mean it will do the same for someone else.

7. The more expensive a skincare product, the better it will work. For the most part, price and efficacy have absolutely no relationship whatsoever.

8. Acne is caused by dirt. The causes of acne are multi-factorial. Mainly acne is under hormonal control and it is the sensitivity of one's oil glands and hair follicles to one's own normal hormones that creates the problem.

9. Liver spots are related to a problem with your liver. The ugly brownish spots may have a liver-colored hue, but there is no connection between liver spots and a person's liver. The age spots have to do with exposure to sun.

10. Warts have roots. Nothing that grows in a person's skin can have roots. Even though warts and cysts can extend deep into the skin, they do not have roots.
