Vinci SA said Wednesday that passengers numbers at its airports sharply declined in its first quarter due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Vinci Airports--a subsidiary of Vinci Concessions, owned by Vinci--said that the number of passengers declined by 21% during the period with a particularly sharp fall in March as governments started to impose more travel restrictions around the world.

"The decline was particularly sharp at the end of March, with very low passenger numbers at certain Vinci Airports network facilities," Vinci Airports said, adding that "the same trend is seen at the beginning of April."

After growth in January, passenger numbers decreased by 5% in February and by 56% in March, the French company said. In total, the 45 airports operated by Vinci handled roughly 45 million passengers during the period, it said.

"Against the backdrop of this unprecedented global health crisis, Vinci Airports has launched a plan across all its facilities to reduce operating expenditure and carefully manage investments, while complying with contractual and regulatory obligations, as well as government decisions," it said.
