ADRs End Higher; VimpelCom Rises

International stocks trading in New York closed higher on
Wednesday.
VimpelCom Ltd. (VIP) was among the companies with ADRs that
traded actively.
The BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts rose 2% to
116.19. The European index increased 2% to 116.20, the Asian index
improved 1.7% to 123.02; the Latin American index rose 3.9% to
143.54; and the emerging markets index increased 2.5% to
204.53.
VimpelCom swung to a fourth-quarter profit as the Amsterdam
telecommunications company benefited from lower one-time charges.
VimpelCom, which is Russia's third-biggest mobile operator, also
said it reached preliminary agreements with the U.S. Securities and
Exchange Commission, the U.S. Justice Department and the Dutch
Public Prosecution Service on corruption allegations related to the
company's operations in Uzbekistan. ADRs rose 12% to $3.79.
Jumei International Holding Ltd. (JMEI) said it received a
preliminary proposal for a management-led buyout that values the
Chinese online beauty products retailer at roughly $1.02 billion.
ADRs rose 8.2% to $6.32.
A bill before Brazil's legislature that would ease requirements
on state-run Petroleo Brasileiro SA (PBR, PETR3.BR, PETR4.BR) and
open up the industry to foreign oil players is "on balance...a
positive for the sector and for Petrobras," Eurasia Group says.
ADRs of Brazil's state-run oil company rose 11% to $3.40.
Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSA, RDSA.LN) said Wednesday it had
started the process of repaying $2 billion in oil-related debts
owed to Iran, easing a key hurdle to doing business there now that
western sanctions have been lifted. The Anglo-Dutch oil giant's
ADRs rose 3.7% to $46.11.
