Harsco Corporation (HSC) has formed a new joint venture in Brazil with Armco Staco S.A. Industria Metalurgica.

This new joint venture is intended to produce and market industrial grating products throughout the growing infrastructure and commercial development sectors of Brazil and South America.

The company aims to capitalize on the existing manufacturing resources of Armco Staco in combination with its own existing resources.

Operating since 1912 in Rio de Janeiro, Armco Staco has one of the largest steel galvanizing operations and recently expanded its footprint in Argentina.

Based in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, Harsco provides industrial services and engineered products.  Harsco will hold a majority interest in the new company, which will operate under the name Harsco Armco Staco Gradesul Fabricacao de Grades Metalicas e Servicos LTDA, or Gradesul. Both the companies expect that Gradesul will compete favorably in the region's metal grating sector, where most small and mid-size competitors still manufacture grating by hand.

Two major sporting events – Football World Cup in 2014 and Summer Olympics in 2016 should drive market demand for grating products due to infrastructure expansion and new construction related to both the events. In addition, demand is also expected to be solid in industrial sectors such as, energy, mining, and offshore oil and gas. Grating is used for open grid flooring, safety walkways, and work platforms across industries along with a broad range of commercial uses.

Harsco is currently executing its OneHarsco strategy to expand its footprint in emerging market economies. In addition to this new joint venture in Brazil, the Harsco Industrial group expects to close its previously-announced joint venture in Australia by next month.
