Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS), an international communications
and information technology company, and Washington County, Wisconsin recently
completed the installation and acceptance testing of their
$11.5 million P25 public safety
communication system. Harris deployed the eight-site trunked
simulcast VHF P25(IP) (Project 25 to the Power of Internet
Protocol) digital system to provide improved mission-critical
communications for the county's public safety personnel, which
serve more than 131,000 residents across the county's 436 square
miles.
"Washington County needed a new
public safety radio system that could provide improved on-street
and in-building coverage," said Dale
Schmidt, Sheriff of Washington
County, Wisconsin. "The Harris P25(IP) product
provided that coverage and was a cost-effective solution. The
Harris system gives us enhanced capabilities and our users are
already experiencing improved communications throughout the
county."
The system operates on 10 VHF radio channels with enough
capacity to accommodate five additional radio channels.
Harris also implemented a county-wide law enforcement, fire
and EMS conventional simulcast alert paging system.
The Washington County P25(IP)
system is based on the Harris IP-based VIDA® (Voice, Interoperable,
Data, Access) network platform and includes geographically-split
high-availability network switching servers for increased
reliability. The VIDA network is a cost-effective,
interoperable radio communications technology that supports P25 and
other IP-based systems. It addresses voice and data
communications needs of transportation, utility and public safety
radio users around the world. It provides a full IP
management platform, including interoperability without
intervention of console operators; IP consoles; networking
technology for both the P25 Phase 1 and Phase 2 technology
standards; and other benefits inherent in open IP architecture
systems.
"With their new Harris system, Washington County has reliable and dependable
communication capabilities to support their daily activities, and
they are well-equipped to meet any large-scale emergency," said
Mike Murray, vice president for
Global Programs, Harris Public Safety and Professional
Communications.
