LG-Harris Technology Helps Provide Critical Communications Services LAS VEGAS, April 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Building on efforts by the nation's broadcasters to use a portion of the digital television (DTV) data stream to relay vital information to police, fire, medical and other first responders, MPH(TM) in-band mobile DTV promises to bring a new dimension to communications in emergencies, both natural and man-made. Developed by LG Electronics Inc., its U.S. R&D subsidiary Zenith, and Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), MPH provides robust over-the-air DTV signals and vital public safety information to mobile, pedestrian and handheld devices. MPH allows local broadcasters to deliver local news, weather and traffic information, both video and data, even when traveling in fast-moving vehicles or using handheld devices away from home. At its exhibit at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention here this week, Harris -- with the cooperation of New Hampshire Public Television, the University of New Hampshire and Project 54, a collaborative R&D effort between the university and the New Hampshire Department of Safety -- is demonstrating delivery of public safety-related data over a locally generated MPH channel. This demonstration is enabled by the SkyScraper(TM) datacasting system, a unique point-to-multipoint content distribution system developed by Triveni Digital, Inc., another LG Electronics subsidiary. Dr. Jong Kim, president of LG's Zenith R&D Lab, said, "At a time when Congress and the FCC continue to search for TV-spectrum solutions to the communications challenges posed by events such as 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, MPH has the potential to become an important new asset. "By introducing the element of mobility," Kim said, "MPH enhances the delivery of critical data such as building blueprints, hazardous materials locations and evacuation routes. With its proven capability, MPH can transmit emergency information not only to institutions, but also to individual police officers, firefighters and hospital personnel via handheld and in-dash devices in their rapidly moving vehicles." Tim Thorsteinson, president of Harris Broadcast Communications, added, "Datacasting critical-services information directly to first responders, including those en route to an emergency, is yet another contribution local over-the-air broadcasters will make to their communities. "With its powerful and highly flexible data pipe, the DTV broadcast infrastructure represents a valuable new resource in situations ranging from police, fire and medical emergencies to severe weather and homeland security crises. The advent of MPH mobile DTV seems certain to make public-safety datacasting even more effective," he said. About LG Electronics LG Electronics, Inc.
