/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an
international communications and information technology company,
has donated $100,000 to North Carolina State University and $80,000
to Purdue University to help enhance the institutions' computer
sciences and engineering programs. The donation to North Carolina
State College of Engineering established the Harris Corporation
Women in Engineering endowment, which will provide general support
for women enrolled in engineering programs. In recognition of the
gift, the university named a room in its Engineering Building II
the "Harris Corporation Student Leadership Office." "Harris
Corporation has a history of collaboration with the College of
Engineering, and this generous gift will provide much-needed
support for our efforts to recruit and retain excellent women
students in the College of Engineering," said Dr. Louis
Martin-Vega, dean of the College of Engineering at NC State
University. "The leaders at Harris are forward thinkers who
recognize the importance of enhancing the diversity of our student
body and encouraging bright, capable women in the field of
engineering. We are grateful to Harris for its continued support."
The donation to Purdue's Department of Computer Science supports a
general-purpose classroom in the Lawson Computer Science building
that will be named the "Harris Corporation Classroom." Harris has a
long-standing relationship with the department and has participated
in the Corporate Partners Program there since 2001. "The leadership
team of the department believes that the dedication of the Harris
Corporation Classroom is a tangible reminder of the generous
support given to the Computer Science Department by Harris and its
employees over the years," said Professor Aditya Mathur, Computer
Science head at Purdue. "We are very grateful for the many benefits
in our partnership with Harris, from job and internship
opportunities for our students to advice and support through our
Corporate Partners Program." Over the past four fiscal years, the
Harris Foundation has made contributions, grants and pledges to
support higher education of science, math and engineering at the
local, state and national level totaling more than $3.2 million,
including nearly $500,000 in employee gift matching donations. "New
computer science and engineering graduates continue to be a focus
of our hiring goals, and strong engineering programs, such as those
at North Carolina State and Purdue, are key to developing the
skilled workforce upon which high-tech companies such as Harris
rely," said Wes Covell, president of Defense Programs for Harris
and a graduate of North Carolina State. "These donations reflect
our ongoing commitment to supporting and enhancing engineering
education and research activities at all levels." About Harris
