Harris Data Terminal Provides Communications Between Fire Control
System and Interceptor MELBOURNE, Fla., Oct. 1
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- An advanced data terminal developed by
Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) played a key role in another
successful test conducted during the weekend by the U.S. Missile
Defense Agency's Ground-based Midcourse Defense system. A Harris
data terminal, used in the In-Flight Interceptor Communications
System (IFICS) at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California,
successfully communicated with an interceptor launched from the
base, enabling the interceptor to hit the incoming missile. The
Flight Test Ground-based Midcourse Defense-03a demonstrated key
capabilities of the interceptor and related components, including
in-flight communications between the fire control system and the
ballistic missile interceptor. The Harris data terminal enables the
ground command and control system to provide updates to the
interceptor after launch, and is a critical component of the U.S.
Missile Defense Program. "The successful performance of the Harris
data terminal is another milestone achievement in our nearly
20-year history of designing, developing and testing communications
systems for the Missile Defense Agency and its predecessor
organizations," said Sheldon Fox, president of Harris Defense
Programs. Harris is working under a multiyear, $200 million
contract with Northrop Grumman Mission Systems. Both Harris and
Northrop Grumman support Boeing in the design and development of
the IFICS Data Terminals. To date, nine of the terminals have been
completed for testing purposes and for Limited Deployment
Operations. Harris Defense Programs business is a major developer,
