Low-power Ranger FLO(TM) transmitters equipped with Harris Apex(TM)
FLO exciters address air interface requirements of the FLO mobile
broadcast standard CINCINNATI and HONG KONG, Sept. 24
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an
international communications and information technology company,
announced that Qualcomm will use Harris broadcast transmission
equipment for its MediaFLO(TM) mobile TV trial with PCCW Limited,
the largest and most comprehensive provider of communications
services in Hong Kong. This is the third international MediaFLO
Mobile TV trial to use Harris transmitters to deliver rich,
high-quality multimedia content to mobile handsets. Previous trials
that Harris supported include BSkyB in the United Kingdom, and
China Network Systems and Taiwan Television Enterprise, Ltd. in
Taiwan. FLO(TM) technology, a key component of the MediaFLO System,
is a globally- recognized air interface technology designed to
increase capacity and coverage and reduce costs for multimedia
content delivery to mobile handsets. The Hong Kong trial will use
Harris Ranger(TM) FLO transmitters with Harris Apex(TM) FLO
exciters, both of which address FLO air interface requirements for
transmission. "Qualcomm is pleased to work with Harris transmission
equipment for the Hong Kong MediaFLO trial," said Mike Coad, vice
president of partner relations for Qualcomm MediaFLO Technologies.
"We have an ongoing collaboration with Harris, illustrating our
companies' joint commitment to advancing mobile TV and
strengthening the global MediaFLO ecosystem." The Harris Ranger FLO
transmitter for Mobile TV is a low-power, air-cooled transmitter
that builds upon the widely deployed Harris Ranger ATSC transmitter
for terrestrial digital TV transmission in the United States. The
air-cooled design of the Harris Ranger(TM) platform makes it ideal
for MediaFLO network deployments. "The recent activity in Mobile TV
trials worldwide has generated a new sense of anticipation within
the international wireless and broadcast communities as more live
deployments appear imminent," said Tim Thorsteinson, president of
Harris Broadcast Communications. "We are pleased to announce our
participation in the Hong Kong trial, the latest in a series of
MediaFLO trials to include our Atlas(TM) brand transmitters for the
delivery of Mobile TV to consumers." About Harris Corporation
