Company Recognized for Technology Innovation Expected to Save U.S. Taxpayer $1 Billion During the 2010 Census TALLAHASSEE and MELBOURNE, Fla., Sept. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) last night received a 2007 Governor's Business Diversification Award for its development of advanced technology that will help the U.S. Census Bureau conduct an accurate, efficient, and secure census in 2010, potentially saving taxpayers more than $1 billion. Governor Charlie Crist presented the award to Harris Chairman, President and CEO Howard L. Lance at the Governor's Mansion in Tallahassee as part of Florida's Industry Appreciation Week, September 17-21, 2007. The awards program, sponsored annually by Enterprise Florida, recognizes companies for diversifying and enriching the state's economy through job creation and distinctive community involvement and investment. "Florida owes its strong economy and exceptional job growth to the innovative businesses, diversity of industries and innovative entrepreneurs throughout the Sunshine State," Crist said. "From hardworking manufacturers to energetic entrepreneurs in high-value-added industries, Florida's business leaders are the source of our prosperity and quality of life." Harris was honored in the category of Innovation in a Major Market (county population 75,001 to 750,000), which recognizes an enterprise that - through product or process - best exemplifies innovative leadership. The award identified the company's 5-year, $600 million contract with the U.S. Census Bureau for its Field Data Collection Automation (FDCA) program that supports the 2010 Census. For the program, Harris developed new wireless technology that will virtually eliminate the need for paper during the door-to-door followup phase of the Census, as well as significantly reduce overall Census costs. Innovative developments include a unique, wireless PDA that incorporates GPS and cellular capabilities and uses advanced biometric fingerprint technology from Melbourne-based AuthenTec (NASDAQ:AUTH). Field Census workers will use the PDAs to accurately and quickly capture information gathered during address canvassing and then securely transmit the information to regional Census databases. The FDCA program complements an additional program Harris is working on to modernize databases used by the U.S. Census Bureau to enable more precise research and tabulations that accurately reflect the nation's geographic census data. "Harris has become a key information technology partner with the U.S. Census Bureau," Lance said. "This is a great example of our success in diversifying and expanding our base of government business. Our ability to win nationally important communications and information technology programs reflects the company's significant investments in research and development and an outstanding technical workforce. I am proud to accept this award on behalf of the 7,000 Harris employees in Brevard County and the contributions they make everyday to our company and community." Harris - one of 12 companies recognized across the state - was nominated by the Space Coast Economic Development Commission. The annual Governor's Business Diversification Awards were developed by Enterprise Florida, Inc. and are presented in five categories - Business Expansion, Newcomer, Export Excellence, Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
