PR Newswire (US)
MELBOURNE, Fla., Aug. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris
Corporation (NYSE:HRS), a world leader in satellite communications
(SATCOM) terminal systems for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD),
announced today that Lockheed Martin Maritime Systems and Sensors
(MS2) has joined Harris as a teammate in the competition to develop
the next-generation, Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) Navy
Multiband Terminal (NMT). The AEHF NMT will be installed on ships
and submarines and also used on shore. The U.S. Space and Naval
Warfare Systems Command is scheduled to perform a competitive
downselect and issue a contract in June 2007 for the design,
development, integration, test and production phase of the AEHF NMT
program. Should Harris win the downselect for the engineering,
manufacture and development (EMD) phase, the overall value of the
NMT program for the Harris team could exceed $1.4 billion by 2015.
"Lockheed Martin MS2 offers valuable submarine communications
expertise and solutions for this nationally important military
SATCOM program, so we are very pleased to have them join our team,"
said Dan Pearson, group president - Defense Communications, Harris
Government Communications Systems Division. "Lockheed Martin also
brings proven Performance-Based Logistics (PBL) experience that is
recognized by the U.S. Navy, as well as a team of strong and
diversified engineering professionals. They will also have roles in
the EMD and production phases of the program if the Harris team is
selected." The NMT program combines purchases for as many as 300
terminal systems for the U.S. Navy and the governments of Canada,
the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. Initial work on the
terminals will be performed at Harris facilities in Palm Bay,
Florida. The AEHF satellite program, managed by the U.S. Air Force,
is a follow-on to the DoD's highly secure and protected Milstar
communications satellite system. Once fully operational, the
Advanced EHF constellation will consist of three cross-linked
satellites. The U.S. Navy's NMTs will enable its afloat and shore
units to communicate simultaneously from anywhere in the world via
Air Force satellites, as well as other military and commercial
satellites. The multiband, multimode terminals will provide
deployed Navy commanders with secure command and control
capability, as well as enhanced communications such as tactical
data and imagery, real-time video, battlefield maps and targeting
information Harris Government Communications Systems Division
