RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., April 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- MTN Zambia has selected Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), a leading global supplier of wireless equipment and services, to design, build and install new microwave infrastructure for its national GSM network. Harris TRuepoint(TM) radios will be used to construct a new network backbone, metro rings and access links connecting MTN Zambia's national GSM network. The new links will enhance voice quality and data capacity for the cellular links around Zambia's capital city, Lusaka, and one of its largest commercial towns, Kitwe. The 155 mbit backbone will be constructed to allow for upgradeability and doubling of capacity as demands for voice and data services grow. This link will form the first stage of a wider project to interconnect the towns and cities of Zambia. "The TRuepoint solution is ideally suited to the needs of telecommunications providers in developing markets," said Beverly Ngwenya, CTO of MTN Zambia. "In such a rapidly growing market, operators need the ability to deploy capacity quickly, and the reassurance that their network is of high quality and can cope with continuing growth and the demands of future services." Harris' TRuepoint(TM) solution was selected over competitive offerings due to the technical capabilities of the TRuepoint(TM) platform and the local support available from Harris' support team in Africa. TRuepoint(TM) radios can be rapidly deployed in a matter of hours, and offer native support for next-generation broadband services with IP over Ethernet, and software- upgradeable capacity. "This is a strong endorsement for Harris' capabilities across Africa," said Joseph Joseph, Harris Microwave Communications Division's regional director for the Middle East and Africa. "Not only do we have the optimum technical solution in TRuepoint(TM), but with extensive support and technical resources on the continent, we can provide the best possible service for our customers." About TRuepoint(TM) TRuepoint digital microwave radios lead the wireless backhaul industry in terms of both performance and manageability. Its modular, software-selectable architecture is able to seamlessly switch between PDH and SDH applications, enabling service providers to use a universal platform to deliver multiple applications throughout their networks. Designed specifically to deliver point-to-point wireless service, TRuepoint radios can deliver service from 4 to 155 Mbps at frequencies ranging from 6 to 38 GHz. In addition, service providers can completely manage TRuepoint(TM) deployments remotely, with SNMP- based management. Built-in diagnostics and performance management are also available.
