Harris Corporation Successfully Completes Weapon Data Link Network Technology Demonstration

PR Newswire (US)
MELBOURNE, Fla., March 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris
Corporation (NYSE:HRS) announced today that it has successfully
completed a flight demonstration showing data link network
connectivity with the guidance electronics for the U.S. Air Force's
Small Diameter Bomb (SDB). The demonstration was the culmination of
a 13-month effort to develop a complete set of weapon data that
will be used in future systems to provide command, control and
status between a network-based user and a smart weapon such as the
SDB. Harris was selected by the Boeing Company in November 2004 to
provide equipment and engineering services as part of the SDB
Weapon Data Link Network (WDLN) Advanced Concept Technology
Demonstration contract for the U.S. Air Force. "The SDB is a
GPS-guided munition with the ability to carry out precision
strikes, a capability that will play a significant role in how our
armed forces conduct future operations," said Dan Pearson,
president of the Department of Defense business unit of Harris
Corporation's Government Communications Systems Division. "Harris'
new network-capable weapon data link successfully demonstrated the
ability to provide in-flight weapon commands, target updates and
re-targeting, providing yet another level of precision-strike
capability that will help to minimize noncombatant casualties and
collateral damage. The weapon data link also provides an in-flight
reverse link that will help to improve the military's bomb-hit
assessments. The combined advanced engineering skills of our two
Harris government businesses were instrumental in the successful
flight demonstration." A Harris-built weapon data link and a Boeing
SDB munition were used in demonstrations conducted at Eglin Air
Force Base, Florida. Contributing to the success of the test were
reliable, secure communications data links developed for the
combat-proven Harris Falcon(R) II family of tactical radios and a
Multifunction Information Distribution System Low Volume Terminal
provided by ViaSat Corporation. The WDLN provided real-time weapon
command, control, and status over both a UHF line of sight and a
Link-16 data link. The Harris technology demonstration system
included hardware and software to communicate with
government-provided ground command stations, as well as a
dismounted TACP system, utilizing both UHF and Link-16 networks.
The network messages developed for the technology demonstration
will be incorporated into the data link requirements of the SDB
Increment II award in early 2006. Harris also is providing Anti-Jam
Global Positioning System (AJ GPS) modules to Boeing for the Joint
Direct Attack Munition, which is a low- cost tail kit that converts
existing free-fall bombs into highly accurate, "smart" weapons. AJ
GPS technology enhances the munition's resistance to both
intentional and unintentional RF interference with the GPS
satellite signal. Harris Government Communications Systems Division
conducts advanced research studies, develops prototypes, and
produces and supports state-of-the- art, assured communications(TM)
solutions and information systems that solve the mission-critical
challenges of its military and government customers, while serving
as the technology base for the company's diverse commercial
