Consolidated Edison Inc. and General Motors Co. said they are partnering on a study to test the ability of electric vehicle chargers to distinguish between electricity used to charge a vehicle and power used simultaneously for other appliances by the same customer.

Building reliability in energy-measurement technologies in EV chargers will help support managed-charging programs, which reward customers for charging their vehicles at times of lower electric demand, the companies said.

Such programs help reduce strain on the electric grid, lower the need for infrastructure upgrades, and bolster the use and value of renewable energy, the companies said.

The study is expected to start at Con Edison's training facility in New York City in early 2023 before potentially moving into field testing with real customers.
