Sakhalin Energy, a joint venture with gas giant OAO Gazprom (GAZP.RS) and oil major Royal Dutch Shell (RDSA) as principle shareholders, said Thursday it has shipped 5.5 million metric tons of liquified natural gas since it launched an LNG plant in February last year.

"The major destination for Sakhalin LNG last year was Japan, representing more than 50% of volume of the delivered LNG," the company said in a statement. The remaining volumes were shipped to South Korea, India, Kuwait, China and Taiwan, it said.

The Sakhalin joint venture, in which Gazprom holds a 51% stake, Royal Dutch Shell a 27.5% stake, Mitsui & Co. Ltd. (8031.TO) 12.5% and Mitsubishi Corp. (8058.TO) 10%, operates the Sakhalin-2 project on Russia's Pacific Coast and launched Russia's first LNG plant in February.
