Applied Micro Circuits Corp., or AppliedMicro (Nasdaq:AMCC), today announced the industry’s first family of 100 gigabit per second (100G) optical network processors for the Packet-Optical Transport System (P-OTS) and IP-over-DWDM transport markets. Supporting network interface transponders, muxponders, Optical Transport Network (OTN) cross connects, P-OTS equipment and routers, AppliedMicro’s 100G OTN products are designed to help network operators expand the capacity of the Internet by a factor of ten to support exponentially growing demand for higher-bandwidth video, social networking and cloud computing traffic.

The first two new devices in the family, TPOT414 and TPOT424, are 100G transponders for metro/core OTN and packet networks. Based on SoftSilicon® programmable technology, these devices are the first to market that offer integrated support for the recently-adopted 100GE (IEEE ) and OTU4 (ITU-T) interface standards.

“With products offering 100G capacity, network operators will be able to take advantage of recent standards to deploy new equipment that significantly expands capacity for optical transport networks,” said Colin Macnab, President of AppliedMicro TPACK A/S. “The SoftSilicon programmable technology of TPOT414 and TPOT424 reduces the 100G adoption risk while providing customers with the ability to change and add functionality in the field. For telecom equipment manufacturers, these products lower the development costs of deploying next-generation services.”

The TPOT414 and TPOT424 devices interface directly to CFP or MSA-168 type optical modules for standalone transponder applications or for line cards in larger systems.

“It is clear that OTN is replacing the role once held by SONET/SDH in the optical network, particularly at 40G and 100G speeds. Carriers love the ability of OTN to carry multiple clients transparently on the same wavelength with management features better suited for today’s network management requirements,” said Andrew Schmitt, Directing Analyst, Optical, for Infonetics. “AppliedMicro’s 100G OTN products and its flexible SoftSilicon design methodology are well suited to this market.”

AppliedMicro’s 100G OTN product family offers an IP platform with both SoftSilicon-based products and advanced ASSP technology to provide telecom equipment manufacturers with efficient solutions that minimize technical risk. A unified software API for all members of the family reduces development time and maintenance and offers an easy migration path for highly-integrated, cost-effective hardware solutions.

“The AppliedMicro 100G family breaks the traditional standard product model by allowing both the fastest deployment time for OTN networking equipment and the lowest total cost of ownership,” said Lars Pedersen, CTO of AppliedMicro TPACK A/S. “Our emerging roadmap of related products will continue to enable the earliest possible systems developments while guaranteeing software investment protection.”

Pin-outs API’s, and data sheets of the TPOT414 and TPOT424 are available now to enable equipment vendors to initiate their board layout work immediately.
