A.P. Moeller-Maersk AS's (AMKBY) chief operating officer, Soren Toft, has abruptly left the company to pursue another opportunity, the Danish shipping and logistics giant says.

Toft was effectively the number two in Maersk behind chief executive Soren Skou, and a key figure in the company's efforts to transform itself from boxship operator to a global supply chain major, with a focus in inland logistics. Mr. Skou will take over Toft's job until a replacement is found.
