Ford Motor Co. said Thursday it will investigate its processes for U.S. emissions certification compliance after a group of employees raised concerns about the company's analytical modeling.

Kim Pittel, group vice president for sustainability, environment and safety engineering, said the company has taken several steps, including "hiring an outside firm to conduct an investigation into the vehicle road load specifications used in our testing and applications to certify emissions and fuel economy."

Ford also said it would hire an independent lab to conduct further testing, and the company retained an independent team of technical experts as part of its investigation team, Pittel said.

Ford said it has voluntarily shared potential concerns with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and with California's Air Resources Board.

"The investigation and potential concerns do not involve the use of defeat devices in our products," Ms. Pittel said. At this time, there's been no determination that this affects Ford's fuel economy labels or emissions certifications."

The company also said it is evaluating potential changes to its road-load modeling process.
