Ford Motor Co said on Tuesday that it will stop investing in its French gearbox manufacturing site in Gironde, near Bordeaux, putting more than 900 jobs at risk.

The U.S. auto maker said production of the new eight-speed gearbox at the Ford Aquitaine Industries factory is "not economically viable."

The site currently employs 910 people.

Ford added that it was committed to finding a "viable and sustainable solution" to keep jobs onsite and it would work with French authorities to help find a potential buyer for the site.

France's economy minister, Bruno Le Maire, said in a statement that he had recently met with Ford's Europe president, Steven Armstrong, to ensure the company could continue to keep a sufficient amount of work on the site until the end of 2019.
