OTTAWA, July 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ - Wi-LAN Inc.
("WiLAN"), today announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary Content
Delivery Inc. has acquired a portfolio of patents and applications
relating to Content Delivery Network ("CDN") technology.
A CDN architecture makes it possible for content providers to
simultaneously send the same content to multiple client computing
devices efficiently and reliably, even when bandwidth is limited or
constrained due to sudden spikes in demand. This is the
methodology that is used to serve a large portion of internet
content today, including internet television and other video
streaming, software downloads and other network services.
For example, major content providers such as Netflix, Hulu and
Amazon will often pay CDN operators to deliver their content to
end-users using CDN architecture owned by the operator.
Content Delivery Inc. has already documented evidence of use of
this portfolio by one major player in the CDN market and will be
investigating whether other players utilize the inventions covered
by the acquired patents.
No upfront payment was made to acquire this patent portfolio.
Net revenues generated from licensing of the patents under the
agreement will be shared between WiLAN and the vendor of the
patents. All other terms of the agreement are confidential.
