Intertek Approved as Non-Electrical IECEx Testing Laboratory and Certification Body in U.S.

Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to
industries worldwide, announces that its Cortland, New York,
facility has been approved by the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) to test and certify non-electrical equipment
intended for use in hazardous locations under the IECEx scheme.
With this accreditation, the facility is one of the first
laboratories in North America to offer certification to both the
electrical and non-electrical IECEx schemes, streamlining the
testing and certification processes for a variety of equipment that
will be used throughout the world.
“At Intertek we are committed to expanding our capabilities to
provide the highest level of service to our customers,” said Sunny
Rai, Vice President of Electrical at Intertek. “We look forward to
bringing our experience and expertise in testing and certifying
electrical equipment for hazardous locations to non-electrical
industries to further assist our customers in this market.”
Until recently, the European Union’s ATEX Directive was the only
one to address explosion safety risks associated with
non-electrical equipment in hazardous locations and explosive
atmospheres, with no international third-party approval route for
global supply. The introduction of ISO/IEC 80079-36 and ISO/IEC
80079-37 and their incorporation into the IECEx scheme provided the
industry with options for global third-party approval for
non-electrical equipment. The U.S. Coast Guard has also issued a
regulation stating that, effective April 2, 2018; all electrical
and non-electrical equipment used in offshore installations must be
certified or listed in accordance with either national regulations
or the IECEx scheme.
Intertek provides global solutions to the hazardous locations
industry with a proven track record of success supporting
clients. From the widely recognized ETL mark and OSHA NRTL
approval for North America, to ATEX notified body status for Europe
and IECEx certification for global markets, Intertek’s team of
engineers and technicians have the experience and know-how to help
with the certification process and provide training and technical
service solutions designed with the industry in mind. For more
