Werner Enterprises Transports New Sandhill Crane Viewing Blinds
January 13 2017 - 1:00PM
Werner Enterprises (NASDAQ:WERN), a premier transportation and
logistics provider, recently partnered with The Nature Conservancy
to transport two dry freight shipping containers to be transformed
into viewing blinds for visitors during Nebraska’s annual sandhill
crane migration.
Werner sourced the containers from a supplier in
China and transported the containers to The Nature Conservancy’s
Platte River Prairies, located between Grand Island and Kearney,
Nebraska. The containers will be retrofitted into modest, specialty
crane viewing blinds with wood paneling, benches and glass windows
with cutouts for camera lenses.
“We love to show people the beauty of these
birds, and we hope it engages them enough to inspire an interest in
conserving the vital Platte River,” said Chris Helzer, director of
Science at The Nature Conservancy.
Every year, The Nature Conservancy hosts
members, partners and students from around the world to experience
the sight of over 500,000 cranes. Werner Enterprises was a founding
member of the Conservancy’s Corporate Conservation Council of
Nebraska in 2015, a growing group of leading businesses that
support nature conservation work throughout the state.
“Werner was the natural candidate for a starting
place as we investigated the cost and feasibility of repurposing
shipping containers as blinds, instead of framing out new
structures,” said Eliza Perry, major gifts manager. “Werner even
donated transportation services. We knew there was a conservation
ethic there.”
