DUBLIN, Ohio, July 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Cardinal
Health named Dr. Peter C. Hu, Ph.D.,
F.A.C.Sc, associate professor in the School of Health Professions
at The University of Texas MD Anderson
Cancer Center, the 2016 winner of the Cardinal Health urEssential
Award, which recognizes the essential contributions medical
laboratory professionals make to patient care.
In addition to being nationally recognized for his outstanding
contributions to the clinical lab and beyond, Cardinal Health will
make a charitable contribution of $25,000 to the institution of higher learning of
Dr. Hu's selection. The contribution will be used as scholarship
funding for MD Anderson's Molecular Genetic Technology Program and
the Graduate Program in Diagnostic Genetics, both of which are
academic programs for students seeking careers in laboratory
medicine.
Dr. Hu received multiple nominations for this award, one of
which stated, "Peter believes that the public deserves well
prepared practitioners of diagnostic molecular science and clinical
cytogenetics, so he takes time out of his very busy schedule,
teaching, publishing and speaking to visit schools of molecular
genetics, cytogenetics and other medical laboratory science
programs for accreditation to assure that they meet the standards
to serve the community. He has done this throughout the U.S. and as
far away as Qatar."
Cardinal Health created the urEssential Award to recognize
outstanding medical laboratory professionals and place a spotlight
on the valuable role they play in health care.
"With lab test results driving more than 70 percent of treatment
decisions, medical laboratory professionals are truly essential to
patient care," said Chris Kerski,
senior vice president and general manager of Laboratory Products at
Cardinal Health. "It is an honor to recognize a deserving,
essential member of our industry, Dr. Peter
Hu, with this year's award. His outstanding work and
dedication to the field fully embodies what the urEssential Award
stands for and we're proud to honor him."
This marks the third year for the Cardinal Health urEssential
award program. Individuals working in the medical laboratory
profession may be nominated by their managers, colleagues, peers
and students, or they may self-nominate. All nominees are evaluated
by a panel of industry professionals on their involvement in three
categories:
- Participation in activities that broaden community awareness of
the medical laboratory profession
- Exceptional contributions in the laboratory that have
positively impacted productivity or supported best practices
- Contributions to the profession to include all activities and
special honors
