Tianma chooses Corning's high-performance substrates for
two new models
CORNING, N.Y., June 3,
2014 - Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) and Tianma
Micro-Electronics Group announced today that Tianma's
low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) panels featuring Corning
Lotus(TM) XT Glass are now in mass production.
Corning introduced Lotus XT Glass last year at
Display Week, an industry tradeshow hosted by the Society for
Information Display (SID). After Tianma qualified the
high-performance display substrates into its LTPS line, it won
several new customer models and entered mass production.
Tianma chose Lotus XT Glass for its exceptional
total-pitch variation, which enables precise component alignment
and efficient panel production. Lotus XT Glass better withstands
the rigorous, high-temperature processes used to create the latest,
high-resolution displays. For Tianma, that means higher yields and
more creative design options.
As a result, the two companies continue to
collaborate closely, and Tianma selected Lotus XT Glass for two new
models: a 5-inch full-HD panel and a 6-inch HD panel.
A leading manufacturer of liquid crystal displays
(LCD) in small- to medium-size, thin-film transistor (TFT) modules,
Tianma develops panels for smartphones and tablets, focusing
largely on the mobile-applications market. Its panels achieve
resolutions of 350 to 450 pixels per inch (ppi), and the company is
currently developing models that boast more than 500 ppi.
"We attribute the commercial success of our LTPS
panels - in part - to Corning's superior high-performance
substrates. Lotus XT Glass is pivotal to our process. Its
dimensional stability enables tight design rules," said Wang Lei,
general manager, Tianma Xiamen. "This helps us develop world-class
panels that meet the growing domestic and international market
demand for ever-increasing resolutions."
The stability and pristine surface of Lotus XT
Glass enable displays to accommodate more pixels per square inch to
produce bright, vivid images with stunning pictures.
"Lotus XT Glass continues to deliver the required
performance within the LTPS and oxide space and has achieved
mass production on multiple lines since its introduction," said
John Bayne, vice president and general manager, Corning High
Performance Displays and Advanced Glass Innovations. "We are
pleased Lotus XT Glass is helping enable Tianma to develop and to
produce products at the leading edge of panel performance."
Corning plans to showcase Tianma's newest panels
in its booth (#703) at Display Week 2014. The tradeshow began June
1 and runs through June 6 at the San Diego Convention Center.
In addition, tradeshow attendees can learn how
Lotus XT Glass can lead to improved battery efficiency and brighter
displays. A new demonstration will show the impact of total pitch
variation on aperture ratio, which affects display performance.
Besides Lotus XT Glass, the Corning booth will
also highlight: Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3 with NDR(TM); Corning®
Gorilla® Glass NBT(TM); Antimicrobial Corning® Gorilla® Glass;
Corning® Willow® Glass; Corning® EAGLE XG® Glass, and Corning Laser
Technologies.
