The New Frontier 2, a newly built liquified natural gas
bunkering barge owned and operated by oil major Shell Plc, was
officially deployed in the Caribbean Tuesday, according to a social
media post by Shell's head of downstream LNG, Tahir Faruqui.
The 18,000 cubic meter vessel undertook its first ship-to-ship
bunkering operation in Portland Bight, Jamaica, supplying fuel to
the Solar Catie, an oil and chemical tanker currently sailing under
the flag of Liberia, noted Faruqui.
Faruqui said that the vessel is the third LNG bunkering ship
that Shell will use in the Americas and joins nine LNG bunkering
vessels under the Shell banner. Shell said it plans to use the New
Frontier 2 to fuel LNG-powered ships that call on ports along the
U.S. East Coast beginning in 2024.
In June, Shell expanded its LNG bunkering locations to include
Flushing and Antwerp. In total, the company has an LNG bunker
network at 19 locations across 12 countries.
