Volkswagen AG recorded another massive drop in sales in April as the coronavirus continued to batter the car market.

The German auto maker sold 473,500 vehicles worldwide in April, 45% fewer than during the same period last year, it said. The sales-decline trend accelerated compared with the previous month, when the group posted a 38% drop.

April sales fell by double digits in all geographical reasons except for China including Hong Kong, where sales inched 1% higher to 305,600 vehicles, Volkswagen said.

Western Europe was one of the hardest-hit regions, with sales for the month down 77% to 75,800 vehicles. In North America, sales fell 53% to 36,200.

The company, which owns the Volkswagen brand as well as Audi, Porsche and Skoda, said sales fell across all its brands. Spanish marque Seat was the hardest-hit with an 80% decline in April.

For the January-April period, the company's sales were down 29% compared with the same period a year ago.
