Global-trade growth is set to slow in the next three months but
will remain positive, according to Deutsche Post AG's (DPW.XE)
global trade barometer, published Wednesday.
Growth will slow by two points to 61 points from 63 points in
September because of a weakened growth outlook in all seven
countries surveyed by the index, Deutsche Post said.
The index is calculated using import and export data for a
number of intermediates and early-cycle commodities that serve as
the basis for industrial production.
The latest results show the U.K. has the least favorable outlook
of the countries surveyed, with an index value of 53 points. India
maintains the brightest overall outlook, with an index value of 75
points, despite slowing from 83 points in September.
Germany's value fell to 56 points from 58 points in September,
Deutsche Post said.
Deutsche Post attributed the deceleration to declines in
containerized ocean freight and international air trade, which
benefited from exceptionally high volumes last year.
"Given the smoldering trade conflicts, especially between the
U.S. and China, and economists' expectations that the global
economy could cool down, it is not entirely surprising that trade
momentum has weakened slightly," DHL Global Forwarding, Freight
Chief Executive Tim Scharwath said.
