Deutsche Post AG (DPW.XE) said Tuesday that subsidiary DHL Global Forwarding is to collaborate with Austrian Federal Railways on a direct rail route between Vienna and Chengdu, China, to tap into the rising trade along China's "Belt and Road" network.

Deutsche Post's air and ocean freight subsidiary has signed a memorandum of understanding with Austrian Federal Railways' freight division for the rail route, which runs across six countries, tracing the "Silk Road economic belt" and connecting China and Austria by land within 15 days, the German postal operator said.

China's Belt and Road initiative, which is credited as the biggest regional development push since World War II, aims to establish rail, port and power infrastructure throughout Asia to strengthen China's exports and political power.

"Austria's economic relations with China are growing steadily and at the same time Vienna is an important hub for trade flows to and from Eastern and Southern Europe," said Christoph Wahl, managing director of DHL Global Forwarding Austria.
