Unlocking Value for Cities With New Network-as-a-Service Offering

Cities worldwide face unprecedented budgetary pressures, coupled with the need to deliver enhanced services to their community. Silver Spring is introducing a new Network-as-a-Service offering where it will deploy, manage and operate Smart City networks on behalf of cities, allowing them to avoid upfront capital equipment and deployment costs as well as reduce operational and management expenditures. Silver Spring’s offering reduces the risk of unwieldy and complex projects and allows cities to leverage the same network for the deployment of additional Smart City applications over time, greatly lowering long-term costs and accelerating speed of deployment for these new services.

“Silver Spring’s decade of leadership delivering some of the world’s largest outdoor IPv6 networks perfectly positions us to help cities deploy high-performance, scalable, and secure Smart City networks today,” said Eric Dresselhuys, Executive Vice President of Global Development, Silver Spring Networks. “Our new Network-as-a-Service offering delivers game-changing economics, reduces risk, and allows cities to self-fund their Smart City network. And our proven ability to support multiple smart infrastructure applications on a single network delivers ongoing value and outstanding return on investment.”

Silver Spring’s Smart City solution is comprised of its proven IPv6 wireless networking platform and management and control software optimized for Smart City devices, delivered via a new Network-as-a-Service offering that enables cities to quickly and easily deploy Smart City services to their citizens. Silver Spring intends to integrate its Smart City solution with device and software partners around the world, including Citelum, LED Roadway Lighting, SELC, Streetlight.Vision, and Sunrise Technologies, among others.

Delivering a Networking Platform Optimized for Smart City Applications

Silver Spring’s Smart City solution helps cities tackle some of the most pressing challenges they confront today:

  • Environmental Sustainability: Silver Spring’s Smart City solution enables cities to dramatically improve energy efficiency and reduce consumption via smart lighting and smart energy solutions, electric vehicle charging networks, connected-CO2 sensors, programs helping citizens make smart energy choices, and other sustainability solutions.
  • Health and Safety: Silver Spring’s Smart City solution enables smart lighting networks to coordinate with traffic control systems in emergency situations for remote on/off, dimming, on-demand brightening, blinking, and notification capabilities. Additional applications could include electrical voltage, natural gas, and water leak monitoring systems.
  • Traffic and Transportation Management: Congestion relief and revenue collection is a significant opportunity for cities. Silver Spring’s Smart City solution is designed to help cities achieve this goal as they network smart parking meters, traffic control systems, mass-transit networks, and smart transit shelters at public transportation depots.
  • Achieving Economic Growth: The compelling economics of Silver Spring’s Smart City solution permits cities to invest proven operational and cost savings into additional Smart City applications for their citizens. Silver Spring’s open, standards-based solution, coupled with the insight-rich data delivered across the network, helps create a platform for entrepreneurs and software developers to bring additional innovations and value to the community. This also helps cities to further attract business investment, draw more skilled talent, and make themselves more economically competitive.

Silver Spring’s Smart City solution has been selected for projects in iconic cities such as Paris and Copenhagen. In Paris, Silver Spring has been selected for an advanced street lighting and traffic controls program as the city seeks to reduce its public lighting energy consumption by 30% over the next 10 years. Copenhagen, often referred to as the world’s most sustainable city, is looking to Silver Spring to deploy a citywide canopy network to connect more than 20,000 street lights and create a platform for future Smart City services.
