Mobile operating systems from Google Inc. (GOOG) and Apple Inc. (AAPL) gained market share in the U.S. during the second quarter while Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM) slipped, according to data from NPD Group released Monday.

Google's Android platform picked up a couple percentage points from the prior period to end the quarter with 52% of smartphone units sold during the quarter, NPD said.

Apple's iOS platform accounted for 29% of units sold--up one percentage point from the first quarter. The BlackBerry operating system from RIM fell from 14% in the first quarter to 11% in the second quarter.

Within the Android ecosystem, NPD found that Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc.'s (MMI) share of handsets sold on the platform fell from 44% in last year's second quarter to 22% this year, as rivals Samsung Electronics Co. (005930.SE) and LG Electronics Inc. (066570.SE) had "substantial gains" within the group.

"Android's momentum has made for a large pie that is attractive to Motorola's Android rivals, even if they must compete with their own operating system developer," Ross Rubin of NPD wrote in a note Monday, referring to Google's plan to acquire Motorola for about $12.5 billion that was announced last week.
