On the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, ITT Corporation (NYSE:
ITT) celebrates its recent efforts and achievements to safeguard
our planet’s climate, communities and resources. Recognized first
in its industry by Newsweek’s 2009 Global Green Rankings, ITT has
demonstrated its commitment to sustainability by developing new
efficient products and technologies; reducing its consumption of
natural resources and generation of waste and emissions; and
engaging employees in environment-focused volunteer efforts.
“A concerted and collective focus on sustainability is essential
to the long-term success of our business,” said Steve Loranger, ITT
chairman, president and chief executive officer. “ITT focuses on
minimizing our environmental impact while applying our technologies
to deliver innovative products that address issues like climate
change and water scarcity.”
ITT employees around the world donate their time and talent to
support environmental causes in their communities. Most recently,
during ITT’s Global Impact Month in March 2010, more than 2,000 ITT
employees participated in fundraising, awareness and volunteer
events through ITT Watermark®, the company’s signature corporate
citizenship program. Events ranged from a local river cleanup in
Columbia, Maryland to a water information fair in Glostrup, Denmark
to a “water walk” at ITT’s headquarters in White Plains, New York.
Year-to-date, ITT employees have raised more than $750,000,
including the company’s match, for ITT Watermark nonprofit
partners—Water For People, Mercy Corps and China Women’s
Development Foundation—in order to provide safe water to children
and families in need.
Environmental considerations are also a key part of ITT’s
business strategy. Its portfolio includes technology that will help
the U.S. aviation industry reduce CO2 emissions, help communities
recycle and reuse every drop of water and measure and monitor
greenhouse gas emissions with unprecedented accuracy and scope. For
example, ITT recently announced that it will be applying its
innovative technologies to improve the energy efficiency of
wastewater treatment plants in Chongqing, the largest city in
Western China.
Within its internal operations, over the past five years ITT has
achieved a 35 percent decline in the intensity of electricity
consumption and reduced its water footprint by 30 percent. ITT is
working to achieve an additional five percent decrease in its
consumption of electricity, natural gas and water, and generation
of non-hazardous waste, hazardous waste and greenhouse gases.
Externally, ITT works with industry leaders to promote greater
measurement of environmental impacts. In collaboration with the
World Business Council on Sustainable Development, ITT contributes
to the Global Water Tool, a free online resource that helps
companies– including ITT – assess their water footprint. In
addition, through its partnership with the Stockholm Junior Water
Prize, ITT engages youth to solve challenges related to the future
water environment.
