Harris Corporation Executive Dr. Andrew Clark Appointed to Ocean.US
Program Office MELBOURNE, Fla., Oct. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) today announced that Dr. Andrew
Clark, president of the company's Maritime Communication Services
(MCS) subsidiary, has accepted a one-year assignment with Ocean.US,
an interagency program office established to design, deploy and
operate a sustained Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS). Dr.
Clark is the first industry executive invited to serve on Ocean.US;
he will continue to provide executive oversight to MCS and serve in
an advisory capacity to Harris throughout this temporary
assignment. The IOOS is designed to be an ocean and coastal
observing and prediction system similar in function to the National
Weather Service. IOOS will gather information from a variety of
land-, air-, water- and space-based sensors to monitor coastal and
ocean conditions. It will serve national needs for detecting and
forecasting oceanic components of climate variability; facilitating
safe and efficient marine operations; ensuring national security;
managing resources for sustainable use; preserving and restoring
healthy marine ecosystems; mitigating natural hazards; and ensuring
public health. "We're extremely pleased that Andy Clark has
accepted the invitation to serve on the Ocean.US program," said Dr.
Richard Spinrad, assistant administrator of NOAA's Ocean Services
and Coastal Zone Management. "Dr. Clark is an internationally
recognized leader in the field of operational ocean observing
systems, and is well regarded within NOAA as someone who gets
things done. We look forward to the leadership and industry insight
that he will bring to this important initiative." "NOAA has been an
important Harris customer for several decades and through this
mutually beneficial assignment, Andy will help launch this vital
ocean-observing initiative and foster a market for our OceanNet(R)
system of ocean-observing buoys," said Bob Henry, corporate senior
VP and president, Harris Government Communications Systems
Division. "He will also continue to provide leadership and
executive oversight at MCS, building on that business unit's record
revenue and profitability." Ocean.US was established as part of the
US Oceans Act of 2000, and is sponsored by the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA), the National Science Foundation, and
the Office of Naval Research. Ocean.US will be staffed by key
officials on temporary assignments from each of its four sponsoring
agencies, as well as by administrators and scientists on loan from
leading national laboratories and universities. Harris Corporation
