Harris Corporation Awarded Radio Systems Contract by U.S. Navy
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris
Corporation (NYSE:HRS), a leading supplier of secure, tactical and
strategic communications systems for worldwide defense forces,
today announced that it has completed the first shipment of
equipment for the Flight 1 T-AKE HF program. The company was
awarded a $2.1 million contract from the U.S. Navy Space and Naval
Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), Systems Center Charleston, in
December of 2003. The contract is for shipboard high-frequency (HF)
radio transceivers and R-2368B(V)1 receiver subsystems. Harris' RF
Communications Division, headquartered in Rochester, New York, will
supply these radio subsystems for a new class of combat
logistics-force ships being built under the T-AKE program. The new
T-AKE is a dry cargo/ammunition ship that will be operated by the
military sealift command. These ships will transfer cargo and
ammunition to U.S. Navy ships and other naval forces deployed at
sea. "Harris' experience with shipboard HF gives us the ability to
offer a highly reliable solution without the need for major
non-recurring expenses," said Mark Moretto, business development
manager, RF Communications Division. "The system architecture is a
proven solution in use with the U.S. Navy, and Harris' approach
represented the lowest-risk, most reliable system based on our
software-defined Falcon(R) II product line." The Navy uses HF radio
communications products for coordination with U.S. Navy ships in
