(NAB) -- Roundbox, Inc., the global leader in mobile broadcast software, today announced it has expanded its exclusive OEM agreement with Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS), an international communications and information technology company, to include a broad range of new Mobile DTV capabilities for broadcasters deploying ATSC M/H. The current joint offering, which is commercially deployed at over 50 broadcast stations, couples the Roundbox Server and the Harris® MPH™ ATSC Mobile DTV system and is the market-leading end-to-end product broadcasters choose when upgrading their networks to support Mobile DTV. These new feature enhancement packages enable broadcasters to deliver new, web-like, on-demand data services to their audiences alongside Mobile DTV video channels, such as interactivity for live TV and innovative Mobile DTV Widgets.

At the heart of the new feature packages is the Roundbox Server, which delivers broadcasters the core, standards-mandated functionality for Mobile DTV including program signaling and announcement. These features are necessary building blocks for receivers to be able to tune and render mobile DTV video as well as display rich program guidance data for consumers. The Server provides a future-proof upgrade path and can be easily deployed within existing production environments while laying the groundwork for a rich set of higher value mobile data services.

Roundbox and Harris have developed a unique proprietary interface between the Roundbox Server and the Harris Synchrony™ MNA that ensures the presence of signaling and ESG data even if there are network interruptions between the platforms. This makes it reliable and easy to support remote located mobile transmission points.

"As an early partner in the development of Mobile DTV, Harris has integrated the Roundbox Server as a core element of our head end solution for ATSC Mobile DTV broadcasters," said Jay Adrick, vice president of broadcast technology, Harris Broadcast Communications. "As one of the primary authors of the ATSC's Mobile DTV specification, Roundbox is committed to the long-term evolution of the ATSC Mobile DTV market by providing the richest software products available and a clear upgrade path for broadcasters."

Some of the new package offerings and enhanced functionality include: Signaling

  • Provides essential codec and stream information needed to tune to a channel and play audio and video
  • Transmits core program metadata including channel numbers, call signs and current program title

Announcement

  • Rich service guide generation, including channel icons and expanded descriptions for current and future programs
  • Management of ESG delivery sessions, bitrate and time partitioning
  • Program data ingest modules supporting popular listings providers including TitanTV®, Tribune Media Services, and Rovi® (TV Guide®)

Interactivity

  • Integrated, guide-based interactive services for live TV, such as ad banners, polling, and voting
  • Signaling and service guide support for a variety of future services including those based on the OMA Rich Media Environment (RME)

Datacasting & Widgets

  • A comprehensive suite of Non-Real Time (NRT) datacasting services including emergency alerts, RSS feeds and Push Video-on-Demand (VOD)

Digital Signage

  • Extends the reach of the Harris Digital Out-of-Home offer by enabling coordinated ATSC-MDTV delivery of signage content and live video to mobile electronic signs across a metropolitan area

Test Client

  • Mobile DTV receiver demonstration and analysis system, suitable for both business- and engineering-focused activities

Service Protection

  • Support for signaling of protected services and key streams
  • Integration with content management and commerce systems to provide purchase and subscription information in the ESG

One of the most important upgraded features in the Roundbox Server supports Non-Real Time (NRT) services / Mobile DTV Widgets, which are compatible with the ATSC's Non-Real Time Content Services standard. Widgets leverage ATSC-M/H's IP-based architecture to provide broadcasters a powerful, flexible system for distributing a variety of ad-supported file and data content over Mobile DTV. The result is a new, revenue-generating service for broadcasters, which integrates the best of the Web, mobile, and broadcast technologies. The Roundbox and Harris Digital Out-of-Home offer demonstrates the industry's first commercial deployment of Non-Real Time Datacasting and Widgets.

"Through our solid deployment experience, we have been able to develop unique service packages that specifically address the challenges faced by broadcasters," said Peter Mataga, chief technology officer at Roundbox. "As the mobile DTV market evolves and expands to new devices, form factors, and delivers new services which go beyond TV, Roundbox has the resources and focus to be a long-term partner for broadcasters."
