Harris Corporation Introduces New Model of Falcon(R) II Multiband, Handheld Radio for International Market ABU DHABI, IDEX BOOTH 4206, Feb. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), a leading supplier of secure, tactical radios for defense forces worldwide, today unveiled a new model of its Falcon(R) II RF- 5800M-HH multiband, multimission, handheld radio for the international market. Featuring an innovative new hardware design, this radio expands the current line of Harris handhelds and provides users with advanced features previously found only in manpack radios. These features include embedded Internet Protocol (IP) networking, embedded text messaging, GPS automatic position reporting, and radio-telephony capabilities. "This new offering truly advances the state of the art in multiband, handheld radios," said Dana Mehnert, vice president and general manager of business development and operations, Harris RF Communications Division. "It provides lower echelon and dismounted troops with the advanced voice and data communications features of a Falcon II manpack radio in a power-efficient, handheld unit." The RF-5800M-HH combines three radios in one to provide low-band, very high frequency (VHF) capabilities for combat net radio; high-band VHF capabilities for public safety and ground-to-air applications; and ultra-high frequency (UHF) capabilities for military ground-to-air communications. Additionally, the RF-5800M-HH is ideally suited for urban environments and can quickly switch between line of sight, ground-to-ground and UHF ground-to-air communications, enabling multimission operations capability with a single radio. The new RF-5800M-HH001 Falcon II Multiband Handheld radio will replace an existing product offering (the RF-5800M-HH030) that was part of the Falcon II radio family and will continue to be supported by Harris. The new model, which weighs less than 1.1 kg, is interoperable and shares a common user interface with other members of the Harris Falcon II family of tactical handheld, manpack, vehicular, and fixed-station radios. Like its predecessor, the new RF-5800M-HH provides continuous coverage from 30 to 512 MHz, features embedded Citadel(R) encryption for both voice and data (up to 16 kbps), and has up to 5 watts of transmit power. Powerful new features of the radio include: * Embedded Internet Protocol (IP) networking that eliminates separate and bulky external interface devices and allows the radio to be connected directly to computers, PDAs, routers, hubs and other IP devices using a simple cable. * Automatic GPS position reporting for situational awareness applications. * Embedded text messaging between multiband handheld radios that is similar to mobile phone Short Message Service (SMS) and eliminates the need for external computer or terminal equipment. * Radio-telephony capabilities that allow the new radio to be used as an outstation radio in telephony systems using the Harris RF-6010 Tactical Network Access Hub. The radio operator can place or receive telephone calls to or from any fixed or mobile telephone in the world directly from the radio front panel keypad/display. * Wireless radio-to-radio cloning of net parameters from a single radio. The new RF-5800M-HH, designed to MIL-STD-810F specifications, also offers 25 programmable radio nets, a 16-button alphanumeric keypad with tactile feedback, and easy software upgradeability.
