CSX Extends Contract With BMC Software to Assure Availability of
Its Mainframe Environment Creates Business Value With Improved
Efficiency and Increased Availability HOUSTON, March 16
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BMC Software, Inc. , a leading providerof
enterprise management solutions, today announced CSX Corporation
has extended its 15 year relationship with BMC Software. After
evaluating the competition, CSX chose BMC Software's SmartDBA data
management solutions for IMS and DB2 mainframe environments because
BMC Software was the only vendor to provide near 24x7 availability,
which is crucial to CSX's business operations. Additionally, no
other vendor could match the efficiencies provided by BMC Software.
CSX technicians estimate choosing alternate vendors would have
required them to nearly double their existing database
administration (DBA) staff. CSX Technology supplies information
technology (IT) services to its sister company, CSX Transportation.
As the largest rail network in the eastern United States, IT is
critical to the business interests of CSX as it enables the
continuous operation of the railroad. If a failure were to occur
within CSX Technology, trains would literally come to a halt.
"Unplanned outages are unacceptable as they can be crippling to our
business. A down application means trains stop running, which
translates directly into lost money," said a spokesperson of CSX
Technology, Inc. "We have come to rely upon BMC's data management
solutions for our IMS and DB2 UDB mainframe environments as no
other software vendor can provide solutions that will support the
level of availability we require. BMC has clearly proven themselves
to be an integral piece of the mechanism that keeps the trains, and
business, running at CSX." BMC Software's administration,
performance and recovery solutions provide the exclusive capability
to allow database maintenance to occur while providing full user
access to corporate data. This contributes significantly to the
outstanding availability provided by CSX Technology. BMC Software's
SmartDBA solutions also significantly contribute to the
productivity of the DBA organization. As a result, a team of five
full-time, one part-time, DBAs is able to support a staff of 150 -
200application programmers for all mainframe DBMS applications.
This extraordinary DBA to programmer ratio is made possible in part
by the automation and ease-of-use of BMC Software's solutions.
Optimal Performance of Train Dispatching Also included inthe
contract extension was BMC Software's Enterprise Performance
Assurance (EPA) solution, which enables companies to better
understand and manage the performance of their IT infrastructure
and the business services that execute across their infrastructure.
After evaluating competitive offerings, CSX chose BMC Software's
EPA because of the optimal performance it provided for the
Company's Next Generation Dispatch Application. Responsible for the
dispatching of trains, this application is very important to the
operations of CSX Transportation. No competitive products evaluated
were able to provide the continuous availability of this
application offered through EPA. BMC Software's EPA solutions,
include PATROL(R) Perform and PATROL Predict. The EPA solutions
gather performance data on historic and current performance usage
and generate business-oriented baselines. Business change scenarios
(growth, consolidation, etc.) can be factored into the overall
performance analysis, ensuring high-confidence that the results
will not only resolve today's performance problems, but will
cost-effectively scale as a company's business grows. BMC Software
EPA solutions enables customers to confidently deploy the right
resources at the right time to meet ever-changing business demands
while continuously assuring the cost-effective and consistent
performance of their business services and infrastructure --
regardless of platform. About CSX CSX Corporation is the parent
